Here is a long post from a dummy...
I have to submit my portfolio of original works on audio and notated. I have my Technics KN6000 and Sibelius 7. BOTH – the Sibelius and Sequencer are new to me. I started with notating in Sibelius and even though it’s fun, I found it to be a tedious work. I have now decided to go with learning one at a time and would want to start with recording the pieces in the keyboard. The question is this: once I have done the works IN the Technics, will I be able to export it into Sibelius? In fact, I know it SHOULD be possible, but I don’t see how Sibelius is going to notate a whole orchestra playing tutti for example. Is there any settings within the Technics that I need to make SURE are set up in order to enable me to export to Sibelius later on? Has anyone of you done that? Any input, and I mean ANY, would be taken on board. Thank you.

Re: MIDI files into Sibelius 7

Hi rosi,

Thank goodness it was only the switch! lol

I wrote you a massively long response but I had a crash here and lost it, so here goes with a shorter one but containing the same info.

You should treat these as separate projects. If I were in your shoes I would do the notation first because that would allow me to play from the notation into my keyboard.

Notation and audio are quite different in my opinion. Notation tells the player what to play but if you play it back completely straight it will sound shockingly bad smiling it will require interpretation.

If you capture a sequence into Sibelius it will just look like spider-writing that nobody will be able to play back. There ill be all sorts of non-notation phrasing, grace notes and unusual timings.

All of the above is, forgive me, assuming that you are not super-expert. I wouldn't consider trying to play a piece into any sequencer and then convert it to notation.

Here are some links to help you:

As you're a KN6000 user, try posting on the KN6000 pages on the TechnicsKN7000 website where your posts will have more exposure to KN6000 users. You are alreay a member of that website because it shares membership with this site - KN6000 Pages

I've re-opened my Christmas project for you to see because it is relevant. Take a look at these pages where I've notated a piece (look at the PDF file) and recorded in the sequencer (use the music player on the page). I'm sure that the task you have ahead of you is more complex but take a look at how I have notated the piece and how different it is to the audio playback - Project Rudolph

Notation is (usually) a guide for the player, not a completely accurate representation of how it will sound as an audio piece.

Take a look at this file where Mikk has played directly into Finale. This is how your notation will look if you capture directly from the sequencer - HERE Mikk is a very fine player but this would be a challenge for anyone to sight read (well, for me to sight read anyway).

You must be signed in to the TechnicsKN7000.com website to be able to see the Project Rudolph pages as they can only be viewed by members. I'll be removing them again until next Xmas soon I've only re-enabled the pages so that you can take a look. Your username and password are the same for that site as this one.

Let us know how you get on, here or there.
Cheers,
Mike

Re: MIDI files into Sibelius 7

I know very well what you are saying. I do. The only reason I wanted to do it Keyboard-Sibelius rather the the opposite was because I struggle with notating drums and I thought playing the drums part on the keyboard will do the job. However, when I play the drums and the Technics is midi connected to the sibelius the notes appear on only one line of the stave which sucks and drove me mad; thus, the decision to record the complete piece in the keyboard and then export it to Sibelius. I agree with you that it is much harder to first record and then notate, but I have the whole score already notated on a manuscript paper (am from the old school) and all I need to do is manually input the notes into Sibelius. As I said, no part from the whole orchestra is a problem when notating; it is the drums. And since I never did a piece of work on drums in my Higher Education in music I never learnt how to do it and it's annoying, because I can hear it in my head, I can play it on the keyboard but so far no luck with a proper drum notation.
I guess, reverting back to learning Sibelius would be the wiser option for now. Sorry it may not make much sense,... But thank you for your input. smiling

Re: MIDI files into Sibelius 7

Are you trying to use built-in drum patterns from the keyboard or are you playing a drum kit sound (with your fingers)?

The latter. For the purpose of the portfolio I should NOT use built-in/ready patterns. smiling

Re: MIDI files into Sibelius 7

I'm not very familiar with Sibelius. You're going to need to get the keyboard talking to it properly. You'll probably need to load the KN6000.ins file into Sibelius (the file is in the member's area) so that it knows what key is what drum. For drums you should generally set Sibelius to be looking for data on MIDI channel 10, so you need to make your KN6000 output the drums on channel 10.

When is your deadline? I can look in more detail on the weekend if nobody else knows smiling

Re: MIDI files into Sibelius 7

Hi MIke, this is a reply to all of your last 3 posts: deadline - end of March'15; 1st link you sent - awesome, I had been looking for this kind of tutorials for ages and all I had found was the PDF you'd send me last.
This linkhttp://www.tomrudolph.com/presentations/Drum%20Set%20notation%20Sib... is pretty basic and it doesn't answer many of the questions explained in this linkhttp://www.midnightmusic.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Sibelius... I am very thankful to you for digging it out for me...
For the time being, I have decided to devote my efforts exclusively to Sibelius since knowing how to manually notate would help me in progressing with Sibelius faster than becoming an expert in recording my works in Technics. I will now do everything composed AND written down in Sibelius; then I am going to record it in KN6000 and after that I am going to do the final touch of the Audio in Cubase. For the purpose of the portfolio, it IS the Full Score of the works that will be assessed. The audio is advisable but not compulsory.
I will be in touch again (smiling once I go back to recording the works.
You've been brilliant and thank you for your attention...
And, again, thank you that the first link.
smiling

Sounds like a good plan rosi. In the meantime I'll download a demo of Sibelius and see what I can find out smiling

Re: MIDI files into Sibelius 7

Very best of luck with Sibelius! This program is a work of genius, especially if you are theory literate...
Thank you again.
See you soon.
