Broken keys

I have a Technics KN1400 and when moving house two of the keys were broken. Does anybody know how to go about getting these repaired/replaced? Thanks.

Re: Broken keys

Hi and welcome to the site, I wish the news was good but it is not I am afraid. The keys on you KN1400 are of the key set type made up of two white mouldings and one black. These sets have been out of stock for some time now. I notice you are in the UK and wondered where? I have a large collection of the KN keyboards either on loan or my own. which means repairs are needed from time to time so I often acquire spare parts in the process. Have you got the broken parts of your keys? as they can be glued with care and the correct type of solvent glue, it is not perfect but will allow the keyboard to be used. I often look for damaged KN models to see if there are parts that are getting few and far between that can be salvaged I did look tentatively at the possibility of 3D printing for replacements but that will not be in the foreseeable future, also will depend on demand and cost.
If you have the broken bits I can advise on the glue type and some tips on how to repair.
Sorry for the gloomy reply

Re: Broken keys

Thank you for your reply. Disappointed to hear the news though. I only have one of the keys which has snapped. If only there was an easy way to fix it as there’s nothing else wrong with it al all.

Re: Broken keys

Hi, as I said where in England are you, I am based in the West Midlands. How much of the broken key have you got? and could you send me a picture as that will give me an idea as to how easy or not the repair will be, I have repaired a couple of keys with mixed results but as a model maker I have now found the right type of solvent glue to use, and I should be able to list all the bits you will need.
Regards John.

Re: Broken keys

So do you have a business or do you work from home? I've attached photos of my keyboard.

Re: Broken keys

Hi, sorry for the delay in reply. To answer your question no I don't have a business, I am now retired but was a Technics dealer back in the 1990's and have worked in the music trade for many years and I am also an engineer working in the service industries both in electronics and mechanical sectors. My connection to the site is based on my love of music, and the desire to pass on my knowledge ( limited as it may be ) of Instrument usage and programming, even spent a number of years teaching although as a dealer it was how to use the instrument features rather than the act of learning/playing of music.
I have looked at the pictures you sent and the keys have broken at the worst place possible, the pivot/hinge point this is where these key sets are at there weakest, have enclosed a photo of a part set, as you can see the plastic is moulded to provide a pivot at the back which flexes to allow the key to be pressed down and return back up again they do not use any springs for return. so glueing the break may well be not strong enough. when I repair keys I use a solvent glue called EMA plastic weld, but you would need to remove the keys to be able to attempt a repair, this requires a service engineer to do this as the keys are one of the first items fitted and one of the last to be taken out of the unit.
I have the service manual should you require it.
Regards John.
