Hello - I just noticed our PR307 Technics keyboard has a distorted sound on very low notes. It appears to be even worse on certain instruments. I'm guessing the bass speaker is going out and wondered if anyone has any advice on a replacement speaker for it, or how to get to the speakers? My father left the keyboard to me when he passed away 16 years ago, and my son has been taking Piano lessons and uses the keyboard a lot. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: PR307 Bass Speaker Blown

I haven't seen one of these for some time! If I remember correctly the speakers are in two parts. There is a pair, left and right, under the top lid inside the main part of the piano and also a separate bass section in the box built into the stand frame. To get into the frame speakers which are possibly at fault you need to dismantle the frame and remove the box then take the back off. The drivers are pretty much standard units and you will not need to try to source originals.

I don't have the service manual for this model but would think that if you remove the driver you will be able to find something very similar from one of your local electronic parts suppliers. Even EBay has drivers that are new stock that are entirely suitable. You are looking for the correct diameter making sure the mounting holes are the same spacing, and a cone with a foam or rubber surround to the edge of the cone. The drivers in a piano are like those fitted to hifi bookshelf speakers. Larger magnets are always a good sign too!

Hope this helps. I would think that anything I can suggest from here in the UK might be more difficult to find in the USA.

Re: PR307 Bass Speaker Blown

Hello Dave,

Thank you for your reply.

Other than the buzzy sounding bass on certain instruments, our Technics keyboard plays and sounds great. I will try and get to the speakers without damaging the unit. My concern was I would open a new can of worms by disassembling it incorrectly.

I am hoping our Technics PR307 plays music for many more years.

Take care.

Matuchi...
