Up until a few days ago, my 20-year-old SX-PX111-EF doesn't want to turn on anymore. Sometimes it does, but nothing works, just a few lights are on on the console. I'm not a technician who would know how to repair this. All mechanical parts are in pristine condition. Before I open it up and break it down, I wanted to ask this forum for advice on what could be done still. The power supply is from France, but the unit is in the US. If you know of interested parties who would want to give it a crack at repairing, please let me know. Is there a market interested in spare parts, because, as i said before, the mechanical parts are in superb condition. Are there collectors who would want to harvest items?

Looking forward to your responses. Thanks in advance!

Re: PX111 available for parts

I can tell you it is completely repairable and to scrap it would be a shame. You do however need to find an engineer who is willing to do the repair for you.

All Technics pianos suffer from the same set of faults at over 25 years old. There is a simple switch mode power supply unit on the main voice board that provides the 5 volts to all the important voice circuitry. These all fail. You need an engineer to replace the following items:

c1 47uf 35volt
c5 1000uf 6volt (please use a 16volt high temperature electrolytic)
Q1 the main chopper transistor 2sa1643
Q2 its difference control driver 2sa1815
D12 MA2062LF (a 6.2volt 2watt zener if I remember correctly)
D1 the zener reference.4.7volt (MA8047) which I think is a 800mw device

Probably no more than $20 of parts if that and with these changed it is likely it will run happily.

Let me know if you find a local engineer to do it for you. If you don't fancy trying TV repair people then there is always the amateur radio people who always have some good technical boffins who would relish taking a piano to pieces and fixing it!

Hope this helps!

Regards

Dave

Re: PX111 available for parts

Dear Dave - thank you very much for the very informative reply. Now I just have to find an engineer in the San Francisco Bay Area to do the work. Please keep me posted if you know of, or find, somebody.

Thanks again for your help!

Re: PX111 available for parts

Hopefully I can revive this old thread.

I am trying to repair a PX111 piano which exhibits the same symptom of 'not turning on'. Being somewhat technical, I have opened it up and the power supplies seem to be in order, the 15V circuits on the AMP board are fine and the powersupply on the main board that is mentioned in this thread outputs 5V.

None of the control LEDs light up, even though the 5V reaches the control board. I suspect the controller IC which is Technics custom-made. How can I ascertain that this is the faulty component?

The power supplies all seem to be in working condition, but Dave is quite firm in his statement regarding the 5V powersupply failure. How can I ensure that the 5V powersupply is powering all components on the main board correctly?

I can provide the schematics if needed.
Kind regards,

Mark
