Hi Everyone and greetings from the UK! This is my first post so apologies if it's in the wrong section.
I have a PX30 digital piano in which the sound has given up the ghost. I've had the instrument for many years and latterly the main volume control has been crackling badly and now finally, has failed. My local electronics suppliers advise that 'linear faders' (slide potentiometers) will fail eventually due to wear. I have tried to source a replacement fader here in the UK to no avail. My problem is, I only have a User Manual for this instrument - no Service manual, therefore no wiring diagram - so identification of the broken part is difficult. An extensive search of the 'net has also proved fruitless.
Does anyone have sight of a wiring diagram for this model of piano and could advise as to part name and number? Is there anywhere I might download such a diagram? Is there anywhere that would stock such a component?
I realise that this is somewhat a tall order! The piano is now old, has been out of production many years and has very little monetary value. However, it is still in excellent condition and played very well up until the volume control failed. Faders cost (in the UK) very little and it would be a shame that such a good instrument should be scrapped for the want of a relatively cheap part.
Many thanks in advance
Rich

Re: PX30 Sound problem
Hi Rich,
I don't have the Service Manual for PX30 but will keep looking for it. I notice it is on Ebay at the moment but it's pretty expensive when you include shipping to the UK as it's in USA.
I do have some (I think) very interesting information about this model within a PCM Technical Guide that covers several instruments. I'll scan and include that in a few weeks, I'm unfortunately extremely busy at the moment which is why I haven't been able to post much on the site for a few days.
I'm sure we'll establish what the sliders are fairly quickly one way or another. Many of the components were exactly the same in early and late models, fingers crossed.
Best wishes,
Mike

Re: PX30 Sound problem
Hi Mike and thanks for the swift reply!
I was rather 'hoping' that the slider would be a fairly standard component as it wouldn't make much sense for Technics to design a special piece for what was a relatively small production run. Discovering the actual component number is the key - as I found out, these faders run into the thousands of types! All of the suppliers here in the UK (including ALPS, the maker) couldn't help without a part number.
The piano has lain fallow for quite a while now so a while longer will do no harm.
Thanks again
Rich

Re: PX30 Sound problem
Hi Rich, can you supply me with the Alps part number you have and if accessible the size of the fader , ie:- dimensions of the soldered pin connections, spacing width and length. I have been able to sort out the codes of some of the Alps components before that Technics have used in the Piano and Keyboard ranges. As with many multi-national companies they source components from all sorts of places you would think they would use their own Disc drives in the Keyboards I have yet to find one fitted with a Panasonic unit !!!
By the way Mike calls me his Mr Ferret,(my name is John "aka-jd5live") as I often end up finding all the unfindable items needed for the site. I would think the fader you are looking for will be fairly standard asyou say Panasonic arn't goig to have one off components made for short production runs.
Regards John.
PS I note you are in the UK if I may ask where ?

Re: PX30 Sound problem
Hi John and thanks!
The fader doesn't have a part number as such, on it, hence my wanting sight of a wiring diagram - perhaps there might be a number there?
What I've done is - removed the mainboard from the piano. Removed the slider (very carefully!) from the mainboard. I managed to de-solder the pins then clean the seating holes in the mainboard ok - there's no evidence of shorting etc anywhere on the board. All other components seem to be ok (visual inspection only).
Inspected the slider and found as follows -
Stamped on the ends, ALPS, JAPAN. On the upper right of the facing edge are the numbers 6W -5KBx2 (1st digit is indistinct - it could be an 8) There are no other numbers or identifying marks. Please see the attached file as to dimensions and pin arrangements etc.
My local electronics shop advised me the numbers mean it's a 5000ohm, dual (i.e. stereo) slider that they would be unable to source. Ringing various suppliers around the UK has proved fruitless as they can't work without a part number! Also there's some confusion as to which dimension constitutes it's 'size' - is it the overall length of the component's body or the length of the lever's travel? (45mm overall - 30mm travel)
My gut feeling is that it is the slider that's at fault but until I can fit a replacement, there's no way for me to be sure. I'm not an electrical engineer but I've built and repaired various computers/laptops over the years along with other electrical projects, so I'm familiar with a soldering iron! If a new slider doesn't fix the problem then I'll have to weigh up whether the cost of a repair by a professional is worth doing or if the instrument is disposed of. I'd rather not scrap it (it goes against my principles - I've brought many a gadget back from the dead!) but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it!
My location is in Lancashire, between Bolton and Bury.
Thanks for your time
Rich

Re: PX30 Sound problem
Hi Rich,
Still on the case, I have checked the KN keyboards I have here, they all use 20K ohm mono sliders as controller for the op-amps. but size wise the are close match to the alps unit, also the PX103 uses a 5000ohm that looks as if it will fit. I have to check out a few more things. So now you know why Mike calls me Mr Ferret !!!, I also have to see if the part is still in stock. will let you know how I get on.
By the way I am down in the west mids just outside of Bilston between Walsall and Wolverhampton.
Regards John.

Re: PX30 Sound problem
Hi John - no rush, I'm grateful for the help.
I spotted this -http://www.synth-parts.com/index.php?lang=1&cl=start&redirected=1... (1st one in the list)
It 'looks' like the one I need except it has a plastic lever rather than a metal one. It's a German site but unfortunately is closed at present so no way to see the specs!
Cheers, Rich
UPDATE: This site has now re-opened so I've had a peek at the slider specs. The physical size of the component appears to be identical to mine, as do the pin positions. However, the rating is 10kOhm whereas mine is 5kOhm. Would this make any significant difference to the operation of the piano? Would there be any detriment to other parts of the system, electrically speaking?
EDIT: Just wondering......... The numbers printed on my slider are 6W -5KBx2 . Could the x2 part (indicating it is a stereo slider) refer to it's value per channel thus being 10KOhm in total? Any electronics experts out there able to shed light on this?
Thanks in advance
Rich

Hi Rich, sorry for the delay in replying but I have only had a reply from Nigel @ Greenhill's today but he does have the correct part in stock for the PX30,
His Email address is "www.wdgreenhill.com"
Hope this helps regards John.

Re: PX30 Sound problem
Hi John - thanks for that - much appreciated. I've been tied up myself lately with other things but I'll chase it up asap.
