Hi there,
Can I ask if anyone has ever changed a back up battery in a SM AC1200 module?
Just got it out after quite a long time in storage and the screen won't light up and nothing works.
Just had the same problem with an old computer and that was the same - a CMOS battery change put everything right immediately so I'm guessing that this is the same problem.
Are there any points to watch out for when opening the case and does anyone know whether the battery is easily accessible and whether it just clips in or is it soldered in place.
Tried to find a service manual for it but with no success.
I would be grateful if anyone has any info regarding this.
Thanks in advance.
Tony

Re: SM AC 1200 Module Battery Replacement

Hi Organgrinder,Technics do not use replaceable Batteries in most of the KN range which includes the SM-AC1200 They use what is called a Super Capacitor unfortunately we don't have a copy of the service manual for either the KN1200 or SM-AC1200. These components are soldered in place, Just checking are you getting any response from the unit when you switch on? do any of the LEDs light up? are you sure your power supply is working (not being rude but have you checked the fuse in the plug?)
I note you are in the UK roughly where are you?

Re: SM AC 1200 Module Battery Replacement

Hi John,Thanks for that information mate - very much appreciated, although not what I was hoping to hear.

When I switched on , the screen initially lit up green but not as bright as it should and then it dimmed to nothing almost instantly.
For this reason, I never did any further checks on the power supply - will do this next but sounds as though I.m going to need a repair man anyway.
No LED's lit up at all so it doesn't sound hopeful Will check the power supply tomorrow anyway.
I do have a phone number for a fairly local, electronic engineer but can't think where I put it (it should have gone onto my computer if I'd had any sense)
I live in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.
Many thanks my friend,
Tony

Hi Tony, Our so called friendly engineer Dave Tutt is a little far from you he lives in Chatham, Kent however he may know someone in your area if you can't find the details you have, come back to us. By the way I have a AC1200 connected to my KN7000 as I am looking to try out midi patches to link the two as I have some KN2000 sequences that where saved in KN7000 format and I wish to recreate the KN2000/KN1200 sequences and as the AC1200 can talk to KN2000 and is easier to have next to my KN7000. As you may guess I like doing things they say can't be done.
Best regards John.

Re: SM AC 1200 Module Battery Replacement

Hi John,
Thanks John - will let you know if I don't find our local engineers details.
Didn't think there would be anyone else still using AC1200 these days but it is a brilliant little box with a big sound if used in the right way.
I can't help with the midi patches I'm afraid - just know enough to transmit left & right hand and that's it so I don't envy you your task but hope you achieve your aim.
You are obviously a glutton for punishment but it shows how much you share my love for Technics boards.
Despite having the Genos, there are some things my Technics boards can do better so I need them to see my days out.
Thanks again mate - all the best.
Tony
p.s. I was listening (on You Tube) to a disk of Technics KN2000 midi sequences from movies a few days ago and think they still sound really impressive when compared with modern boards.

Re: SM AC 1200 Module Battery Replacement

Hi John - again,
Found the engineers details and emailed him. However, I was thinking about my SM AC1200 problem and thought that if it has a capacitor, it may recharge if I leave it plugged in for a whole day.

Good news this time - the display is now showing and a couple of LED's are lit up so I figure I will leave it like that all day and then hook it up to my Genos tomorrow and I expect it will work once I re-setup the midi.

It has taught me though, that anything with a capacitor instead of battery, needs plugging in now and again to make sure the charge doesn't run out completely as it did in my case.

Got to contact the engineer again now to tell him that I probably don't need him now so he'll have me down as an old idiot (which I am).
Thanks for stepping in when needed mate.
Regards,
Tony

Hi Tony, just checking in to see if the AC1200 is up and running? many members may find themselves in the same boat if they lieve ther instruments switched off for long periods of time
Regards John.

Re: SM AC 1200 Module Battery Replacement

Hi John,
Yes, it's been fine - spent all afternoon on it today and everything worked flawlessly and it's great to have some of my favourite Technics styles again whilst playing the Genos. I ll make sure, in future that stuff in storage keeps getting fetched out now & again and given some power for a few hours.
Not enthusiastic about going back to floppy disks though - luckily, I have a USB floppy drive because my present computer doesn't have one. Top marks to Technics for putting an SD Card reader on the KN7000.
Thanks agaiin
Best regards, Tony
