Help request received via email:

Hi Mike, a couple of days ago I found a same-as-mine-problem question in the KN6000 forum being asked but with no reply; I replied to the member asking him if he had sorted out the problem, but since his question was old, I knew in a way that I won't get a reply. I can't really wait any longer and I don't know where else within the site to look for, thus emailing you in a panicky state (as I literally started working with the Keyboard 4 weeks ago and for the time being it is the tool that I need to earn money). I know you have been sick lately and are behind with everything you're after and, of course, I will definitely understand if you don't reply, but I just HAD to ask you.

Here is why I am contacting you:
About 3 weeks ago my Technics (KN6000) started making 2 problems:
The first one: while I was going through the Midi files I had recently downloaded from your site I noticed that my display didn't look the same ONCE I'd go out of the files and just want to use the built-in Rhythms. Unfortunately, I didn't take a shot of the screen and since the keyboard is now not with me, I can't take a picture for you to see. Despite of that, though, I would be able to play whatever I would chose, BUT suddenly the whole arrangement would go down in volume; I had to turn off and then on again the keyboard and the volume would be ok. It is very frustrating because it happens when I am at work and, for instance, the other night I was singing Rupert Holmes' 'Escape' - it was fine and then I selected 'Copacabana'; when it started there was no bass (not talking about the instrument Bass) and it sounded horrible; so, it happens with the built-in rhythms AND Midi songs. When I turn off and turn on again, it would be fine (MOST of the times), but then...the second problem...

It started around the same time when the first problem occurred, namely, when I press the Power button the screen would flash black to grey to black to grey and so on and wouldn't display any info on it. At first it was only happening once every other day but then almost every time; on Saturday it wouldn't start at all, meaning no matter how many times I'd power off and power on - the display would still be flashing black to grey.

At the moment the keyboard is with an electrician guy who said, if it was something with the power he may be able to fix it. A few hours ago he called me and said that he doesn't see anything wrong with the power connections and that he THINKS it is something to do with the computer of the keyboard (which means nothing to me); he sent me some pics (I have attached them) of what he THINKS MAY be playing us around. He is NOT a keyboard repairer and here, on the Island there are no many people that would agree to open the keyboards, more over the make Technics for the locals is totally unknown. George (the guy) said the keyboard started playing (as it would do with me), but then the next time he would power it on - it wouldn't; then it would and then it wouldn't.

Now, the question: do you have any idea what might it be? I AM in an urgent need to know whether I can do anything about it; I already cancelled 2 auditions where I was required to use my keyboard, but never mind, it just wasn't meant to happen.
PLEASE let me know if you have any idea.
Thank you Mike.

Hi Rosi,

I saw your post on the forum but there was nothing I could contribute so I didn't respond. Sometimes if I respond people think "it is answered" and then they don't look any further, so it is not always a good thing for me to try to answer if I have no idea!

It sounds like a power issue to me. Especially at this time of year when I am guessing you are playing in warm weather in Cyprus. I know that Dave has fitted heat sinks to some models in the past to help with heat problems.

However, I'm just simply guessing. I know nothing about how the electronics work really.

I'm copying this to John and Dave who are both Engineers but they will have definitely seen your post before so I'm not holding much hope. It must be very difficult to diagnose these types of things without seeing them.

Dave, John,

I'm forwarding this to you so that you have the images Rosi has sent but please respond in the forum if possible so that it is useful to more people (if you have any response). I've posted it all in the repairs forum to save everyone time.

Best wishes,
Mike

Not to worry, Mike and many thanks for replying. I mean, if there is nothing we can do distantly, that's fine. It was worth asking, though. I guess I will have to look into the option buying another keyboard and have it shipped to me to Cyprus. THANK you, Mike! Thank you for everything you do to satisfy your members. You are amazing!

Re: KN6000 Display and Sounds issues

Hi there

Sorry I haven't replied earlier. There are so many issues with old electronics that I can only suggest that the most likely place to work on is the power supply. These are all suspect after a while as they do start to fall to pieces given that they could be at least 15 years old. I repair things that have failed power supplies after only a year, sometimes less so they are the item most under stress in just about any piece of equipment.
So a general parts replacement around the power lines should clear this. I do suggest too that the heat sinking is inadequate in all Technics equipment which is fine if you only run it for an hour but if you are a user who plays much more than this or leaves the instrument on then it is advisable to upgrade this during any repair.

C16 and 17 25volt 4700uf should be replaced as a first point and then any capacitor that looks under stress. I would think any local engineer (TV people are a good starting point) and go from there.

Hope this helps

Regards

Dave

Re: KN6000 Display and Sounds issues

Latest update - the problem was not solved. I don't think, however, it cannot be solved had the keyboard happened to be in the right hands; the guy that tried to see what was wrong with the it does not have experience with keyboards, thus his opinions and expertise are not really valid, although I am so thankful for his time...

Mike, if you are reading this post, here is another question: my first Technics is still with me, it's KN750, the floppy drive isn't working and I am thinking IF I replace the Floppy drive (no idea where to get it from, though) would that be worth doing and I mean, are there any songs/styles/sounds available for this ancient, haha, keyboard?

In the meantime I am looking into the option of buying another KN6000 as I am having guests coming from England for a holiday here in Cyprus on the 5th Jul and they can bring it over. But, again, buying over the internet and NOT being there to check if it works upon collection is risky...Damn, so frustrating. Anyway, keep positive, Rosi! smiling

Re: Re: KN6000 Display and Sounds issues

Final update: the keyboard could not be fixed; I bought another one (same model) from the UK, when it arrived I checked it as much as I thought would be necessary and a few hours later I took it to work; in the middle of a Bossa Nova the rhythm starting skipping (like a damaged CD); I have stopped using the keyboard now as I have adapted all my repertoire for a piano only and haven't played it all since that gaff.

Re: KN6000 Display and Sounds issues

Hi Rosi.
Your initial problem of sudden drops in volume was almost certainly the APC/Sequencer Volume slide top left of the keyboard which I have found should always be kept fully up/on. Changing from a midi to a setup for live play is always risky without making sure that EVERYTHING has been seperately saved for each file to your floppy disk which presumably how you were keeping your settings for each song....all of that is past history now that you've moved on to the relatively safer territory, of course.
However...
If you preferred using a keyboard rather than a piano, the big jump in terms of downloading speed of set ups for songs etc that is part of the KN7000 with its memory chip called an SD Card (around 1 to 2 seconds max) makes it an ideal leap...and the machines are not as old as the KN6000s.
Now it just happens that I've got a spare KN7000 in tip top condition - I live in the UK - if you choose to go down that route.

Oh, that's a pity...I have always wanted to have the 7000, but it's a little too late now. smiling
