Re: KN5000/KN6000

The Hard Drive units were supplied by an external supplier "Key Soft Service, Switzerland " Email "[email protected]" as far as I am aware the units were designed for each model and were not interchangeable nor the supplied software. This was the only company to supply internal hard drives for the KN series and was approved by Panasonic/Technics
Regards John.

Re: KN5000/KN6000

A couple of years back, I was convinced that the hard drive on my KN6500 was broken. Every time I tried to save settings for stuff I had set up on the sequencer, the instrument crashed and went through a re-boot. I arranged for a Technics engineer to visit and he confirmed the hard drive was indeed screwed. He also told me about Key Soft Service and I got in touch with them. It turned out I could buy a replacement KN6500 on eBay for what it would cost me to obtain and have the hard drive fitted. Not having sufficient funds, I accepted I was stuck with my problem.

A year later, I thought I'd have one last, despairing attempt to get the full use out of my keyboard and contacted this forum. John responded and told me how to perform a factory re-set... BINGO! Everything is now back to normal and I can use my KN6500 to its full capabilities. I don't know why you are asking the question about fitting a KN5000 drive to a KN6000 but, if your keyboard has malfunctioned and the symptoms are anything like those I describe, ask John to let you have the same info he gave me. He's been very helpful to me and I trust his advice implicitly; you never know, your solution might be as simple as mine.

Cheers,
Mike

Re: KN5000/KN6000

Hi Mike hope I find you well, I just wish to say thank you for your kind words and trust yur KN6500 is still behaving it's self., we managed to pass the 10,000 member mark on the last day of 2018. It is a great milestone, Mike has worked hard to establish the site. as ever we are looking to bring more and more into the fold including more Organ and PR ( the digital ensembles) users and I am working on what style/software is compatible across the ranges this data will be ready hopefully late spring early summer as you can imaging it takes a lot of trail and error through testing what will be accepted by each model in the range as well as moving styles across the ranges.
More new stuff for 2019 hopefully.
Best regards John.

Re: KN5000/KN6000

Thank you so much for your replies.
The reason I asked if a KN5000 HDD might fit a KN6000 was, I sourced a KN6000 for sale, so I was hoping to salvage the HDD from my ‘rhythm defunct’ KN5000 to install on it.
I appreciate your advice.
Regards
Joe

Re: KN5000/KN6000

I think your problem is completely different from mine in a technical sense but, in terms of being able to recover & use stuff that you previously created, they're the same. The technical problem I had was that it seemed my hard drive was corrupt. However, John solved that by telling me the procedure for a factory reset.

In terms of recovering old data, I created a whole raft of song files using an Atari ST sequencing program but my Atari computer gave up the ghost and I can't get a sequencer for Windows that is compatible with the song files. I've tried an Atari emulator but I just don't have the tech knowledge to make that work. I believe people who write user manuals think that the people they're helping already know as much as they do and they use jargon, abbreviations and general tech-speak which renders the manual worthless.

I suspect that your main problem is going to be hooking up the KN5000 drive to your KN6000 instrument. I doubt the newer keyboard will accept two drives running simultaneously so you're going to have to try to read the old drive via your PC and then try to upload that data on to the KN6000 drive. John might be able to help you do that. I don't know if it's possible to write the data to your KN5000 floppy drive and then read it from the KN6000 floppy drive. Somehow I doubt it.

Recalling how great solving my original tech problem felt, I wish you success - I think that, if John can't help, nobody can. Good luck.

Mike O.
